Percentage Calculator Online Free

Percentages appear in almost every area of daily life — shopping discounts, exam marks, salary increases, tax calculations, profit and loss, and much more. Our free Percentage Calculator handles all three common types of percentage calculations instantly with no signup required.

What is a Percentage?

A percentage is a way of expressing a number as a fraction of 100. The word "percent" comes from the Latin "per centum" meaning "per hundred." The symbol % represents "out of 100."

For example, 75% means 75 out of every 100, or three quarters of the total.

Our Tool Calculates 3 Types of Percentages

Type 1 — What is X% of Y?

Find a specific percentage of any number.

Formula: Result = (X ÷ 100) × Y

Example: What is 18% of Rs 10,000?

  • Result = (18 ÷ 100) × 10,000 = Rs 1,800
Common uses: GST calculation, discount amount, commission, tip calculation

Type 2 — X is What Percentage of Y?

Find what percentage one number is of another.

Formula: Percentage = (X ÷ Y) × 100

Example: 450 marks out of 600 total — what percentage?

  • Percentage = (450 ÷ 600) × 100 = 75%
Common uses: Exam marks, business market share, completion rate, survey results

Type 3 — Percentage Change from X to Y

Calculate the percentage increase or decrease between two values.

Formula: Change = ((Y - X) ÷ X) × 100

Example: Salary increased from Rs 50,000 to Rs 60,000 — what is the percentage increase?

  • Change = ((60,000 - 50,000) ÷ 50,000) × 100 = 20% increase
Common uses: Salary raise, price change, profit and loss, inflation rate

Real Life Examples — Pakistan

Shopping Discount Calculation

When buying clothes, electronics or groceries during a sale:

  • Original price: Rs 5,000
  • Discount: 30%
  • Discount amount: Rs 1,500
  • Final price: Rs 3,500
How to calculate: 30% of 5,000 = (30 ÷ 100) × 5,000 = Rs 1,500 discount

GST and Sales Tax Calculation

Pakistan has different GST rates for different goods and services:

  • Amount before tax: Rs 10,000
  • GST rate: 17%
  • Tax amount: Rs 1,700
  • Total payable: Rs 11,700

Exam Marks Percentage

For Pakistani students calculating their result percentage:

  • Marks obtained: 450
  • Total marks: 600
  • Percentage: 75%
Calculation: (450 ÷ 600) × 100 = 75%

Salary Increase Calculation

When negotiating a raise or calculating the value of an offer:

  • Previous salary: Rs 80,000
  • New salary: Rs 96,000
  • Percentage increase: 20%
Calculation: ((96,000 - 80,000) ÷ 80,000) × 100 = 20%

Business Profit Percentage

For small business owners tracking profit:

  • Cost price: Rs 2,000
  • Selling price: Rs 2,600
  • Profit amount: Rs 600
  • Profit percentage: 30%
Calculation: (600 ÷ 2,000) × 100 = 30%

Percentage in Business and Finance

Profit Margin Profit margin percentage tells you how much of each rupee of revenue is actual profit.

Formula: Profit Margin = (Profit ÷ Revenue) × 100

If your business earns Rs 1,00,000 revenue and Rs 25,000 is profit, your profit margin is 25%.

Return on Investment (ROI) ROI measures how much you earned relative to what you invested.

Formula: ROI = ((Return - Investment) ÷ Investment) × 100

If you invested Rs 50,000 and earned Rs 65,000, your ROI is 30%.

Inflation Rate Inflation is measured as a percentage increase in prices over time.

If a grocery basket costs Rs 10,000 this year and Rs 12,500 next year, inflation is 25%.

Market Share If your business sells 800 units in a market where total sales are 5,000 units, your market share is 16%.

Common Percentage Calculation Mistakes

Confusing Percentage of vs Percentage Off "20% of Rs 1,000" means Rs 200. "20% off Rs 1,000" means you pay Rs 800.

These sound similar but have different results. Our calculator clearly labels each calculation type to avoid confusion.

Adding Percentages Incorrectly You cannot simply add percentage changes together. A 50% increase followed by a 50% decrease does not return to the original value.

Example:

  • Start: Rs 1,000
  • After 50% increase: Rs 1,500
  • After 50% decrease: Rs 750
The result is Rs 750, not Rs 1,000.

Percentage Points vs Percentages If interest rates rise from 10% to 12%, they increased by 2 percentage points — but that is a 20% increase in the interest rate itself. These are different measurements that are frequently confused in financial reporting.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate a percentage without a calculator? Move the decimal point two places to the left to convert a percentage to a decimal, then multiply. For example, 25% of 200 = 0.25 × 200 = 50.

    How do I add GST to a price? Multiply the price by (1 + GST rate/100). For 17% GST: Rs 10,000 × 1.17 = Rs 11,700.

How do I calculate the original price before discount? Divide the sale price by (1 - discount/100). If an item costs Rs 700 after a 30% discount: Rs 700 ÷ 0.70 = Rs 1,000 original price.

What is the difference between percentage and percentile? Percentage is a score out of 100. Percentile is a ranking that shows what percentage of people scored below you. Scoring 80% means you got 80 out of 100. Being in the 80th percentile means you scored higher than 80% of all test takers.

How do I calculate percentage of marks for Pakistani board exams? Divide your obtained marks by total marks and multiply by 100. Example: 450 ÷ 600 × 100 = 75%. Check your specific board's grade boundaries as they vary slightly.
